Choosing the Best Standby Generator for Your Florida Home
Standby generators are classified by their rated output, or the amount of electrical power they provide. Smaller models may offer only 7,000 watts while large residential models can provide 20,000 watts or more. If you’re considering a standby generator for your South Florida home, it is a good idea to think about the appliances and electronics you will need during a power outage and to calculate their power needs.
On most modern devices, a label will be affixed somewhere discreet, such as the back or the bottom, that lists the power requirements. Make a list of all the devices you will need and record their power specifications. Many devices will list the rating directly in watts, but others may only have the current listed, measured in amps. To find the wattage for such devices, multiply the voltage for the circuit by the amps it draws.
For appliances that plug into a standard wall outlet, the voltage will be 120, so a device that is rated at 3 amps will draw about 360 watts of power. Large appliances like stoves, clothes dryers, water heaters, and air conditioners are often on 240-volt circuits. If the current is listed in milliamps, multiply the number by 1,000 to find the rating in amps. For example, a 500-milliamp device draws 0.5 amps.
Here are estimates for some of the most common household devices:
- Refrigerators: 600 watts
- Chest freezers: 200 watts
- HVAC systems: Up to 3,500 watts
- Electric stoves: Up to 3,000 watts
- Elecric water heaters: Up to 3500 watts
- Laptop computers: 50 to 100 watts
- Desktop computers: 250 to 400 watts
- LCD televisions: 100 to 200 watts
- Internet modems: 40 to 75 watts
- WiFi routers: 10 to 50 watts
- Mobile phone chargers: 10 to 30 watts
- Lights: 20 to 30 watts for LED or fluorescent bulbs
For the basic household items, only about 5,000 watts or 5 kilowatts of power may be needed. An entire home may take 12 to 20 kilowatts of power. Choose a generator that has about 30% to 50% more power than you need for room to grow and higher reliability. Look for features like WiFi connectivity for monitoring your generator and automatic, whole-home transfer switches for greater convenience.
